Harnessing Personal Fall Protection

Understanding and Embracing Safety-First Systems and Equipment

Fall protection systems are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation of BC.

Injury prevention through ongoing education and training seminars will assist you in developing a Fall Protection Plan to minimize risk and ensure a work-safe environment for all.

A comprehensive Fall Protection Plan would recognize:

  • Risk of a Fall
  • Types of Equipment to be used and their capabilities
  • Training Procedures on the use of the equipment
  • Rescue procedures (which would include self-rescue)

Fall Protection Chart Stats - Sept 2012

There are two distinct systems, Fall Restraint or (Travel Restrict) and Fall Arrest.
Fall Restraint is designed to be proactive and prevent a fall before it happens.

The Two Main areas of Fall Restraints include:

  • Safety Systems which incorporate a “Travel Restrict Solution” (Safety Belts and Full Body Harnesses) which allow the worker to move more freely.
  • Guardrails and/or Travel Restrict equipment preclude the worker from entering the critical fall zone.

The two main areas of Fall Arrest include:

  • Lifelines attached to solid anchors that are connected to a full body harness, using a Lanyard and Rope Grab.
  • Safety Nets used as a collective Fall Arrest system.

On a final note, the cost of Health and Safety versus the risk of Health and Safety is rising each year. Therefore, correct attention to building a safe work environment that is risk-adverse, well equipped and outlines a Fall Protection system, could save you and your team members’ lives or, at the very least, decrease your cost of disability claims/benefits.
Falls from heights are a leading cause of serious injuries in the residential construction industry. Learn more about WorkSafeBC’s “Stay on Top” enforcement blitz and visit the “Safety at Work” section at WorkSafeBC.com.
